Tabernacle
The word tabernacle means “tent” and symbolizes God’s presence in the world. The tabernacle houses the consecrated Eucharistic bread – for silent adoration and for communion to the sick. In Catholic belief, Christ is truly present in this bread, which is why the tabernacle is richly adorned.
Originally, the tabernacle was located on what was then the altar. During the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), the liturgy was changed: the celebrant was to walk around the altar and celebrate Mass facing the congregation. Therefore, when the sanctuary was redesigned in 1977, the tabernacle was placed high on the back wall above the seats. In the course of the church's redesign, it was moved to its current location in 2013.
