Madonna
The limewood Madonna sculpture originates from the predecessor church building. It was created around 1855 by Franz Bernard Schiller (1815–1857), a sculptor active in Hamburg, though it has been heavily restored multiple times.
Mary holds the Christ Child in her arms. She stands atop a globe representing the world. With her foot, she crushes the serpent that persuaded Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Mary thus appears as the Mother of God who plays a role in God’s work of redemption from original sin.
