Sacred Heart Icon

The Sacred Heart icon depicts Christ with an open heart – a symbol of his love and mercy for all people. The reference to John 19:34 recalls the blood and water that flowed from Christ’s pierced side, representing the sacraments and the Church. Hence the liturgy of the feast proclaims: “The Heart of the Redeemer stands open for all, that they may draw from the wells of salvation.”

In this devotion, Jesus is portrayed as the personification of God’s love. The feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated annually on the third Friday after Pentecost. The icon invites believers to receive and share this love.
