St. Ansgar

This limewood sculpture of St. Ansgar also comes from the previous church building and was likewise created around 1855 by Franz Bernard Schiller. It too has undergone significant restoration.

Ansgar, born around 800 in northern France, was a monk in Corbie and later in Corvey. From 826 onward, he worked as a missionary in northern Germany and Scandinavia. As he resided in Hamburg from roughly 831 to 848, he is considered the city’s first bishop. The model of a church in his hand refers to the first church he founded in Hamburg. Due to his long and dedicated mission, he is known as the “Apostle of the North.” Ansgar died in 865 in Bremen.
